Background:

Mexico is one of the largest economies in Latin America, but more than 13 million people in rural areas remain below the poverty line. Many of these remote communities lack access to basic services such as healthcare, education, and housing.

Many farmers cannot readily access land or services, and often don’t have access to modern farming techniques that can increase production. But with the right support, they can improve the quantity and quality of production, access new markets and see their incomes increase.

More than 366,000 families supported by our work.

Heifer International has worked in Mexico since 1977, supporting local farmers through livestock projects and agricultural training that enables them to diversify their families’ diets and increase incomes.

Working closely with farmers, we help build their business development skills and better connect them to opportunities within the coffee, honey, mezcal, poultry, cattle, pigs, and sheep value chains. Through agricultural cooperatives and community savings institutions, we help local farmers build sustainable businesses and secure better prices and distribution opportunities.

Featured Projects

Milpa for Life

The Milpa for Life project, funded by the John Deere Foundation, helps 2,700 small farming families in Yucatán and Campeche increase their income, productivity and sustainable management of land. The project uses conservation agriculture to make traditional milpa farming (maize, beans and squash) more productive and enrich household nutrition and income while building ecosystem and climate change resilience. Farmers also learn how to diversify with poultry, beekeeping and pigs to further improve their economic and nutritional well-being.

Living Income

Heifer works with farmers to secure a living income so they can lead dignified and prosperous lives. Learn more about what achieving a living income entails.
