Unlock Financial Freedom for Women Through Micro-Loans

Help women business owners in Africa build financial readiness and credit through our Micro-Loan Impact Fund.

Women face countless barriers to financial access — maybe they can’t sign their name, maybe they don’t have collateral or can’t prove their income. This makes opening a bank account — let alone acquiring a loan — challenging if not impossible.

But when you give to the Micro-Loan Impact Fund, you break down these barriers, giving women in Africa the opportunity to gain financial independence for the first time.

  • The Micro-Loan Impact Fund provides loans to women entrepreneurs in the Naija Unlock program in Nigeria.
  • 100% of donations to the Micro-Loan Impact Fund go toward loans for project members.
  • Once a loan has been repaid, it is lent out again to another farmer, creating a domino effect.

How The Micro-Loan Impact Fund Works

STEP 1

You donate to the Micro-Loan Impact Fund. A farmer receives financial training and a loan, which she uses to increase her farm’s production.

STEP 2

After harvest, the farmer repays the loan, building credit and gaining financial access. As her business grows, so does her income.

STEP 3

Your gift returns to the fund to become another loan, repeating the cycle and helping another woman achieve the same success!

Your donation helps farmers like Grace Atusimirwe grow their business and establish their credit.

She Benefits – And So Do You

  • Borrowers are protected and receive training in farming and financial literacy.
  • Women use the $525 loans to buy solar-powered water pumps, bringing dependable irrigation to their fields.
  • The loan repayment schedule is customized to the farmer and the loan is repaid after harvest.
  • Through the loan, a farmer establishes her credit and becomes bankable.
  • Your donation becomes a gift that keeps on giving – when the initial loan is repaid, it's lent out to help another person.
  • You receive impact reports about how your gift has changed lives.
  • Your charitable donation is tax deductible.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a micro-loan?

A micro-loan is a small loan to a person or business who might not qualify for a traditional loan.

How does the Micro-Loan Impact Fund work?

Through the Micro-Loan Impact Fund, your donation is pooled with funds from other donors to provide small loans to business owners who otherwise would not have access to financial services. Through this iteration of the Micro-Loan Impact Fund, business owners in the Naija Unlock program in Nigeria can apply for loans. When a borrower is approved, they use the loan to grow their business. After harvest, they repay the loan to the fund and build formal credit. Once the loan is repaid, your donation returns to the Micro-Loan Impact Fund to become another loan for another business owner, and the cycle repeats.

How are borrowers selected to receive a micro-loan?

Applicants are carefully evaluated to make sure they are ready to receive the loan with minimal risk to them and Heifer.

To be considered, applicants must:

  • Be part of an existing Heifer project
  • Receive training in financial literacy
  • Receive training in Values-Based Holistic Community Development and Heifer’s 12 Cornerstones
  • Identify a source of repayment
How are micro-loans used?

Through this iteration of the Micro-Loan Impact Fund, business owners in the Naija Unlock program in Nigeria will use the loans to buy solar-powered water pumps. Funds cannot be used for other resources in this cycle of the program.

What happens if a loan can’t be repaid?

We take every measure possible to ensure the business owners in our programs are set up to succeed. Our goal is to help, not harm, them. If a borrower has problems with repayment, we work with them to renegotiate the payment schedule or extend the term, building in flexibility as needed to ensure the loan is not a burden. Despite our best efforts, losses do occur. In such cases, we assist the borrower through the process. Additionally, Heifer programs offer support to farmers in case of unforeseen events that may result in business losses.

What size loan do borrowers receive?

Through this iteration of the Micro-Loan Impact Fund, farmers in the Naija Unlock program in Nigeria will receive a $525 loan to buy a solar-powered water pump.

How does 100% of my donation to the Micro-Loan Impact Fund go to the borrowers?

We are proud to share that 100% of your donation to the Micro-Loan Impact Fund directly supports loans that substantially improve productivity and income for smallholder farmers. Your generous contributions layer on top of the strong foundation built by our supporters, enabling us to build the foundation and ensure readiness of our smallholder farmers for formal financing and engaging equitably with market players. This holistic approach not only empowers farmers but also minimizes their financial risks, paving the way for a brighter future.

I’ve donated to Heifer in the past. How is this different?

While the farmers Heifer International serves often begin their journey with gifts of animals, seedlings and education, their farms grow over time, eventually requiring financial investment to flourish. Our Micro-Loan Impact Fund provides farmers loans needed to scale their farms and businesses and build their credit for future lending, bringing them one step closer to a sustainable income. Once the loan is repaid, your donation returns to the Micro-Loan Impact Fund to become another loan for another business owner, and the cycle repeats.
