Women face countless barriers to financial access — maybe they can’t sign their name, maybe they don’t have collateral or can’t prove their income. This makes opening a bank account — let alone acquiring a loan — challenging if not impossible.
But when you give to the Micro-Loan Impact Fund, you break down these barriers, giving women in Africa the opportunity to gain financial independence for the first time.

A micro-loan is a small loan to a person or business who might not qualify for a traditional loan.
Through the Micro-Loan Impact Fund, your donation is pooled with funds from other donors to provide small loans to business owners who otherwise would not have access to financial services. Through this iteration of the Micro-Loan Impact Fund, business owners in the Naija Unlock program in Nigeria can apply for loans. When a borrower is approved, they use the loan to grow their business. After harvest, they repay the loan to the fund and build formal credit. Once the loan is repaid, your donation returns to the Micro-Loan Impact Fund to become another loan for another business owner, and the cycle repeats.
Applicants are carefully evaluated to make sure they are ready to receive the loan with minimal risk to them and Heifer.

We take every measure possible to ensure the business owners in our programs are set up to succeed. Our goal is to help, not harm, them. If a borrower has problems with repayment, we work with them to renegotiate the payment schedule or extend the term, building in flexibility as needed to ensure the loan is not a burden. Despite our best efforts, losses do occur. In such cases, we assist the borrower through the process. Additionally, Heifer programs offer support to farmers in case of unforeseen events that may result in business losses.

We are proud to share that 100% of your donation to the Micro-Loan Impact Fund directly supports loans that substantially improve productivity and income for smallholder farmers. Your generous contributions layer on top of the strong foundation built by our supporters, enabling us to build the foundation and ensure readiness of our smallholder farmers for formal financing and engaging equitably with market players. This holistic approach not only empowers farmers but also minimizes their financial risks, paving the way for a brighter future.
While the farmers Heifer International serves often begin their journey with gifts of animals, seedlings and education, their farms grow over time, eventually requiring financial investment to flourish. Our Micro-Loan Impact Fund provides farmers loans needed to scale their farms and businesses and build their credit for future lending, bringing them one step closer to a sustainable income. Once the loan is repaid, your donation returns to the Micro-Loan Impact Fund to become another loan for another business owner, and the cycle repeats.
