Heifer staffers have traveled the world covering Heifer's work, and while most of the farm animals we meet are great....sometimes things get weird. Here are a few of our creepier encounters:
1. Devil Goat
Take this goat, for example. It's the kind of goat that makes it abundantly clear why goats are sometimes used to symbolize Satan. I hate to break it to you, but now that you've looked you no longer have a soul. The goat took it, and he ate it. Sorry about that.
If you dare to keep scrolling, keep your wits about you. The next creature on our list doesn't wear its true nature so clearly on its face, but do not lower your guard. Prepare yourself for...the blood-sucking water buffalo?
2. Vampiric Water Buffalo
Turn out the lights, sit very still and chant “Bubulus bubulis!” three times. This wizardly incantation is Latin for “water buffalo,” a breed of which has grazed the fields of Transylvania since the time of Vlad the Impaler, aka Dracula. The water buffalo of Romania are furrier and more compact than their southerly cousins, features that help them get through the dark and stormy Transylvanian winters. Heifer Romania project participants have so far reported no vampiric tendencies from their water buffalo. But if you happen to be castle-hopping in Transylvania this Halloween you should probably keep up with an occasional Bubulus bubulis chant, just in case.
3. Lurking Fog Llama
You feel a prickling on the back of your neck. You turn. Your blood runs cold. What’s that lurking in the mist? It’s the dreaded FOG LLAMA. He’s wet. He’s irritated. And he’s coming for you.
4. Chupacabra
Preliminary cryptozoological examinations suggest this photo proves the existence of a genuine chupacabra, the hairless and heartless blood-sucking legend. Alternatively, it could be a Mexican hairless pig. Jury’s still out on this one.
Supposing it is "just" a pig, here's a fun fact to mull over: did you know that pigs have been known to consume human flesh? Aren't you glad you're still reading this list?
5. Killer Duck
Normally we'd say don't judge by appearances, but "Whiskey" the Guatemalan guard duck is just as scary as his face implies. He nearly took World Ark reporter Jason out.
That's it for our top five scariest barnyard buddies this year. Have you had any terrifying encounters with would-be farm friends? Email us your photos or video at worldark@list.heifer.org, or tweet us @world_ark!
Bonus: Evil Gourd
Of all the vegetables in the world, a gourd is probably among the least frightening, right? WRONG. Look at baby Joshua. He’s no fool. He knows that there is something truly terrifying lurking behind that gourd’s green, knobbly exterior. And he’s not having it. Not today, gourd. NOT. TODAY.
