Heifer farmers are helping others in their community by sharing resources in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Solidarity in the face of the hardship is fundamental to sustainable community development in Heifer's model, and this principle is at the heart of the 46 families participating in the Beyond Coffee project that decided to share resources with other families who need to diversify and increase their production. These families gave coffee seeds to help secure the future income of others in their community who are struggling.
The initiative was carried out on May 5 at Finca La Copa, owned by Norlan Gadea, in the town of San Rafael del Norte. Expressing words of gratitude, Heifer project participant Francisco Vargas said, ‟We are very grateful for the opportunity to learn to multiply resources, and above all to share. These are things that we did not do before, and it is very important for the development of our families and the community.”
Prior to the ceremony, Heifer staffer Sayda Centeno shared with families the information from Heifer Nicaragua's educational campaign about COVID-19 and discussed prevention measures such as social distancing, handwashing, the importance of leaving home solely for work and using all protective measures.
