Agriculture has an important role to play in protecting our environment and tackling climate change. Small-scale farmers produce one-third of the world’s food, with agriculture providing an important source of income for billions of people around the world. But this Earth Day, livestock and its place in a climate cooling food and farming system is under attack. The boom in plant-based products is fueling criticism of the meat sector, while ignoring the importance of livestock for many small-scale producers the world over.
Heifer International believes livestock can be part of a sustainable farming system. Regenerative farming uses practices like Holistic Land Management and Holistic Planned Grazing with well-managed livestock to regenerate the land and sequester carbon back into the soil. At Heifer Ranch in Perryville, Arkansas, a Savory Institute Global Network Hub, Heifer USA is training farmers in best-in-class regenerative farming practices, testing innovative solutions to sustainable production and using science-backed methods to test soil health on other farms.
Join Donna Kilpatrick, Heifer Ranch Manager and Land Steward, with Nicolette Hahn Niman, rancher, attorney and author of Defending Beef, to reframe the conversation on food, farming and climate change and discuss the important role that animals play in growing a better world.
