Friends of Heifer Make a Lasting Difference
Madge Brown sits on a chair, drinking from a Heifer mug.
Madge Brown has been a Heifer supporter since 1977, and a Friend of Heifer for 10 years. She also traveled on an early Heifer donor trip abroad— visiting Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. “I was so impressed with what people were able to do in their communities once they received their gift from Heifer. That sold me forever.”

If the members of the Friends of Heifer community could meet one another, they’d find they have a great deal in common: a commitment to making the world a better place, to investing their charitable contributions wisely and maybe even a very good bridge game.

What is a Friend of Heifer, you ask? Friends of Heifer help families in need around the world by pledging a monthly gift toward livestock and training. Those pledges provide better nutrition, more income and a better life to families in need.

Madge Brown of Little Rock, Arkansas, has been a Friend of Heifer donor for 10 years—and a Heifer supporter for even longer. Her first gift came in 1977, and her generosity has been steadfast ever since. “I was very active in my church when I lived in Hot Springs,” she recalled in a recent interview, “and they were Heifer supporters. When my late husband and I moved to Little Rock, I made contact with Heifer headquarters right away, because I wanted to be involved. I became active and stayed that way.”

Madge has volunteered for local Heifer events and visited the Heifer Ranch in nearby Perryville multiple times. “I think the Ranch is wonderful and just keeps getting better,” in the way it introduces visitors to many of the animals that Heifer gives project participants around the world, and teaches them about Heifer’s mission and impact.

“I’ve never been interested in supporting a group that just provides a one-day assistance for somebody,” said Madge. “I know they need food today. But I want to be involved with somebody who’s gonna provide food for the rest of their life. And that’s what Heifer does so well.”

Madge had the opportunity to see Heifer in action when she traveled with the organization on a donor trip abroad. Part of a delegation of Heifer supporters that traveled to Africa, Madge visited projects in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.

“That was a privilege,” she said today. “I was so impressed with what people were able to do in their communities once they received their gift from Heifer. That sold me forever.”

Madge knows that her reliable monthly support as a Friend of Heifer makes sure her commitment to lifting families from poverty—and the results she saw with her own eyes in Africa—is always in motion, continually making a difference for people in need.
