For more than 12 years, Heifer has been committed to development work in this island nation that has seen more than its share of natural disasters.
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (August 24, 2012) - Heifer International's Haiti country office closed Friday at noon, ahead of the forecast landfall of Tropical Storm Isaac.
Two and a half years after the January 2010 earthquake that devastated areas near Port-au-Prince, Heifer Haiti staff, led by Country Director Hervil Cherubin, report concern about destructive winds and torrential rains, forecast to be as much as 20 inches across the country.
According to U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Isaac is likely to gather strength and turn into a hurricane before it passes over the island of Hispaniola shared by the Dominican Republic and Haiti - but Haiti is expected to take the brunt of the storm.
Heifer International is monitoring the situation and is in communication with the Haiti country team during this period and will determine an appropriate course of response once the storm has passed and we receive reports of the situation on the ground.
Heifer International's global family is keeping all affected people in our thoughts during this very serious threat. Updates will be provided when available.
