LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (Nov. 25, 2014) – Carolyn House Stewart has been elected to an at-large position on the Board of Directors of Heifer International, an international development organization whose mission is to end hunger and poverty and care for the Earth.
Stewart is an attorney and former shareholder at the law firm of Macfarlane Ferguson & McMullen, one of Florida’s oldest law firms, where she has worked since 1994. There, she handles the firm’s civil litigation, casualty and labor law sections.
Stewart served as the international president of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority from 2010 until July 2014. She chose “Global Leadership through Timeless Service” as the sorority’s programmatic theme during these years, and Heifer International was the recipient of those fundraising efforts. During Stewart's four-year term of office, AKA members volunteered more than 6 million hours of service and impacted the lives of 24 million people through program initiatives.
“Carolyn’s deep understanding of community—one of Heifer International’s bedrock values—will be invaluable,” said Pierre Ferrari, Heifer International’s President and CEO. “Through her professional expertise, as well as her leadership and expertise as president of AKA, she will help us further mobilize the community and harness the power of collective action. This basic precept of our work with donors and communities animates Heifer and always has; Carolyn will help us build on this movement to end poverty and hunger.”
Her professional achievements have earned her numerous awards including the 2006 Florida Commission on the Status of Women Achievement Award, The National Bar Association Presidential Award and the Francisco Rodriguez Award from the George Edgecomb Bar Association. The National Bar Association honored Stewart with the Gertrude E. Rush Award in 2012 and Presidential Award in 2006. She was recently presented the Sadie T. M. Alexander Award from the National Black Law Students Association. Stewart is also the recipient of the Legacy Award from UNCF for support of education and a former UNCF board member.
Her 35-year legal career began after graduating from the University of South Carolina School of Law. She also holds a bachelor’s in History and Social Science Education from the University of South Florida.
Said Stewart, “I look forward to working with the Heifer International Board of Directors and to supporting the organization's great work to end hunger and poverty and to create sustainable economic empowerment for women around the globe.”
Heifer International’s Board of Directors comprises 19 members of diverse backgrounds in the business, agriculture, academic, faith-based and private sectors.
