Heifer at Hanukkah campaign promotes the mitzvahs of tzedakah and tikkun olam
This year Hanukkah coincides with Thanksgiving creating “Thanksgivukkah.” Heifer International believes this remarkable coincidence should be celebrated as “Thanks-Give-A-Cow.” Gifts through Heifer International reflect the Jewish teachings of tzedakah (charity) and tikkun olam (repair the world).
A donation to Heifer International provides farm animals, training and more to impoverished families around the world. They are given a hand-up, not just a handout. The goal of Heifer at Hanukkah is to help children appreciate the importance of charity and how their charitable contributions help repair the world and lift families from poverty to self-reliance. Children learn that Heifer families feed themselves with the milk from cows and goats, and the eggs from chicks and ducks.
The venerable actor Ed Asner, who has played Lou Grant on “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” and Santa Claus in “Elf,” and long-time Heifer International supporter, said, “In celebration of the day of "Thanks-Give-A-Cow" this year, remember not to have a cow but rather give a cow! It is a moo-velous idea!”
Thanks-Give-A-Cow and give a gift of hope and opportunity. Visit http://www.heifer.org/hanukkah to learn more about Heifer at Hanukkah.
