Heifer names Pietro Turilli Europe vice president

Officer has experience with UN International Fund for Agricultural Development

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (Sept. 27, 2010) – Heifer International announced today that Pietro Turilli, a former evaluation officer with the United Nations International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) in Rome, is the new vice president of the organization's European area program.

"Heifer has a long and rich history of working with families in need in Europe, in Armenia and Romania, in Kosovo, Macedonia and Bosnia," said Jim DeVries, executive vice president of International Programs for Heifer. "It's an area in development and recovery, from wars and unrest, with a determined people.

"Pietro's work with IFAD, as well as his knowledge of Heifer's sustainable development model, holds great promise—for the people of Europe as well as for Heifer itself."

Prior to his work as an evaluator for IFAD, Turilli was a country program manager at IFAD in the Near East and North Africa regional division. In that role he managed, developed and directly supervised country strategies and an investment portfolio which reached more than $USD 80 million in a number of different countries, including Albania, Armenia, Georgia, Macedonia, Moldova and Romania.

A central part of his work was to develop partnerships with governments, bilateral and multilateral donors (including the Department for International Development in the United Kingdom, the Swedish International Development Agency, Italian Development Cooperation and the World Bank) for co-financing, joint project implementation and policy dialogue.

"These relationships, as well as others he will forge, will be key to helping more and more families in Europe," said DeVries.

Turilli received his bachelor's degree in International Politics from the School of Foreign Service in Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., and his master's in International Affairs from the School of International and Public Affairs in Columbia University in New York. He is fluent in Italian, English and French.

Heifer's mission is to end hunger and poverty while caring for the earth. Since 1944, Heifer International has provided livestock and environmentally sound agricultural training to improve the lives of those who struggle daily for reliable sources of food and income.
